Esri’s Spatial Data Server : ArcGIS Server 10.1 improve access to databases

At ArcGIS 10, we introduced the concept of Query Layers. They enable ArcGIS users to have direct access to spatial types in a database, without the need for ArcSDE technology. 10.1 extends the query layer capabilities further by adding support for Netezza databases and enhancing the query layer user experience. Through query layers, you can easily share any spatial data in your database over the web.
ArcGIS Server 10.1 introduces another choice for publishing spatial data in your databases to the web: the Spatial Data Server. This technology component is included with all editions of ArcGIS Server and lets you build REST Feature Services on top of your databases. Spatial Data Server is available for IIS (Internet Information Server) and Java (for Apache Tomcat and JBOSS). Spatial Data Server is great for organizations looking at web enabling their databases without having to configure an entire GIS Server.

One of the most interesting announcements made at the Esri UC was that support for native read/write access to spatial databases, without ArcSDE, will be coming at ArcGIS 10.1. This is exciting because it will make it easier to view, edit, and publish spatial data that’s managed outside of Geodatabase and ArcSDE databases
